Arizona Gives Day: 33 Buckets’ Global Impact
What is Arizona Gives Day?
“Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all.” (1)
Our mission is to end the global water crisis, in which people from our country in cities like Flint, Michigan or across the globe in Cape Town, South Africa struggle to access quality water. Access to water is just the first step for communities to prosper and thrive. When women and children spend an estimated 200 million hours hauling water every day, or when women need to walk an average of 6 km just to access clean water, communities cannot prosper (2).
33 Buckets’ History with AZ Gives Day
33 Buckets started off as a small team of undergraduate engineering students at Arizona State University. We take pride in the fact that our mission for making a global impact of empowering communities with clean water access has taken off with the support of our very own home state.
In 2019, we hosted our first-ever Arizona Gives Day campaign raising $4,830 from individual donations and prizes! The following summer, we used the funds to launch clean water initiatives in three new communities. We also provided essential follow-up support in two of our existing partner communities. In total, our 2019 AZ Gives Campaign improved access to clean water and sanitation for over 1,700 people.
Last year, we reached out to our Arizona network to make our summer projects a reality. The results were phenomenal. Our supporters contributed $4,402 in individual donations which qualified us for the Power Hour and Golden Ticket Raffle granting us an additional $5,000.
What is the impact of your donations?
The $9,402 raised by the 33 Buckets community last AZ Gives Day was pivotal in our COVID-19 Prevention campaign and clean water implementations in new partner communities in the Ccorca District in Peru.
We facilitated the construction of six public hand-washing stations, distribution of 1,150 sanitation kits, and implementation of eight educational seminars. Overall, 33 Buckets created improved access to sanitation resources and education, for 1,137 families (~4,500 people). Despite a devastating outbreak of COVID-19 in Peru, none of our 9 partner communities have reported a significant outbreak.
At the end of 2020, our Executive Director, Daniel Hoop, was able to travel to Peru to launch a partnership with the Ccorca District, about an hour southwest of Cusco’s city center. We worked with our local partner and leaders from the district to launch two community-wide treatment projects in the communities of Totora and Cusibamba. We installed improved chlorine disinfection systems to more consistently produce safe, potable water. We equipped water managers with chlorine testing devices, translated operations manuals, and direct training on effectively utilizing the system. The approximately 370 families of these two communities now have improved capacity for maintaining around-the-clock access to clean water.
