Project Launch: June 2018
Population Served: 300
System Used: Chlorine Disinfection
Mayrasco is a community of about 300 people located just south of the city of Cusco. It is located in the District of Santiago, which does not receive the tourism income of other regions near major attractions like Machu Picchu.
33 Buckets connected with this community while organizing another project in the nearby town of Occopata. In May 2018, we held a community meeting and agreed to implement a similar water project, scaled down to meet the needs of this smaller community. 33 Buckets installed a chlorination system to disinfect the water supply in June. Recent tests carried out by the local government have shown that the water is being effectively treated. 300 people now drink safe water thanks to you, our partners and donors!
June 2019 Update
In June 2019, 33 Buckets revisited Mayrasco to improve upon the previously installed chlorine disinfection system. The improvements we made during this visit will allow Mayrasco to have even more precise control over the amount of chlorine entering their reservoir. In addition to the improvements to their disinfection system, we also helped them implement more accurate water testing and data collection procedures to help them gain a better understanding on the condition of their drinking water.
June 2020 Update
The Problem: Lack of public running water and sanitation resources creates a high likelihood for a devastating COVID-19 outbreak
Our Action: Handwashing stations, sanitation packs, and hygiene education
In response to the increasing cases of COVID-19 in Peru, we connected with our local partner in Cusco, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL).
Together, we designed a plan to fund and deliver essential resources and knowledge to the community of Occopata, Peru which is home to 286 families.
On June 8th, our USIL partners and community members worked together to construct two public, foot-pedaled handwashing stations, which delivered running water and antibacterial soap. In addition, handwashing techniques and best practices for COVID-19 prevention was taught through an educational seminar. Each family received a WASH package containing soap, sanitizer, masks, cleaning solution, and an educational flyer on COVID prevention.
