It is with a profound sense of gratitude that I will be stepping down from my position as Executive Director of 33 Buckets.
Since joining the team in 2017, I have served the organization as an intern, volunteer, and eventually as its director and leader. Over these six years, 33 Buckets has given me the opportunity to spend a total of over 2 years abroad visiting and working in 35+ communities in the Cusco region of Peru.
In 2020, 33 Buckets recognized that building a highly effective, on-the-ground team would be crucial to our continued impact in the Cusco region of Peru. In early 2021, Daniel, our Executive Director, connected with Angelica Vergara Cusihuallpa, a recent graduate from her Environmental Engineering program. Working for a national agency at the time, Angelica explained her contract in the Ccorca District would end in a few months, drastically reducing the support available to water managers. While one door closed, another had opened! We presented the opportunity for Angelica to continue supporting the communities in Ccorca, but as a partner to 33 Buckets and our Team.
It’s no secret that water is vital to a prosperous life, yet nearly one in ten people do not have access to clean, safe water1. The global water crisis is one of the greatest challenges that we face in our modern day, affecting health and quality of life across the world. This crisis takes many different forms. In some communities, women and children walk for hours a day to retrieve water from a reliable source. In others, community members have no choice but to knowingly drink contaminated water.
Clean water is something that a majority of the modern world takes for granted. When the tap is opened, clean water flows. We use our water for drinking, cooking, washing, and much more without worry that it will run out or no longer be safe for consumption. Ultimately, we don’t live every day considering how access to clean water makes our lives possible. But for many individuals, families, and communities, this is not the case.
My name is Anna Babb and I went down to Peru for the last 2 weeks in June to volunteer with 33 Buckets. I had heard about 33 Buckets through a family member involved in the organization who is passionate about the project. I love the opportunity to help people in many ways and working with 33 Buckets sounded like an adventurous opportunity to explore a new part of the world as well as offer help to some of the people living there.
Our current Research & Development Consultant, former intern, Marisol Luna Aguero, writes about how she came to follow a path to water management and policy through her experiences interning at 33 Buckets and visiting Peru one impactful summer in 2019.
Sooner than we’d like, another year is approaching its close. 2021 has been a year of challenges and successes, and we at 33 Buckets want to celebrate our achievements with our supporters with our second annual Art-4-Agua Auction. Read more about why we started it last year, the impact of the generous donations, and additional information about this year’s in-person auction event.
There are talented students at every college and university looking to gain real-world experience and apply their knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact. Although college students typically have limited experience, they can still provide tremendous value to non-profit organizations through their enthusiasm, fresh perspective, and emerging knowledge-base and skill-set. It’s also a low risk option to bring in talent to a non-profit and potentially identify future interns and employees. Read more about how to leverage passionate college students for your nonprofit goal.
Our interns reflect on their reasons for being a part of a non-profit with the goal to provide long-term clean water access. Learn about what their specific roles are, what they enjoy about working at a non-profit, and what they’ve learned in their time with us so far.
Water is available in abundance in Totora, one of several communities that we at 33 Buckets have partnered with in the Ccorca District of Peru. As the need to achieve water security has been given critical focus globally, see how this community has rooted a sustainable water supply into its structure.
Project Development intern, Adam Westmoreland, writes about his observations of water conservation efforts in the small communities of Cusco, Peru.
