Project Launch: December 2020
Population Served: 500
System Used: Chlorine Disinfection
Problem: Although there is sufficient water year-round, local water managers report difficulty in disinfecting contaminated water before it’s consumed by community members. Interviews, surveys, and water quality tests confirmed that current methods of chlorine disinfection fail to consistently produce clean water.
Our Action: 33 Buckets launched a community-wide treatment project in collaboration with the Municipality of Ccorca, Totora’s water management team (JASS), and our local partner Sustainable Development Studies in Peru. We installed a new chlorine disinfection system at the community’s largest reservoir, providing resources and training for local water managers. Initial feedback from our community partners suggests that the system has significantly improved the community’s access to clean water on a regular basis.
In January of 2021, we began working with our local partner, SDS, in supporting them to recreate an effective chlorine disinfection system with parts available in Peru. The first prototype is now being piloted at Totora’s secondary reservoir. We are actively collecting feedback on the new prototype with plans to improve and scale the design in the Ccorca district.
